Young Thug's attorney Brian Steel wants to disqualify the presiding judge from participating in the YSL case.
At the very end of Day 93 of the lengthy trial on Monday, June 17, Steel passed around a courtesy copy of his motion to disqualify/recuse Judge Ural Glanville. In the court document, Steel claimed Glanville "is biased against Mr. Williams and favorable to the prosecutors." He also filed a motion for a mistrial based on the "improper conduct" that Steel accused the judge and the prosecution of last week.
"The court violated the law by failing its duty to recuse from presiding over this contempt proceeding," Steel wrote in the motion.
"The court involved itself in these proceedings by joining the prosecution team and conducting the ex parte meeting that violated Mr. Williams’ rights," he continued. "This created a conflict of interest for the court because its own unethical conduct is questioned and at the heart of this issue."
For the unfamiliar, Glanville, prosecutors and an attorney for Kenneth "YSL Woody" Copeland met with the witness without the defense after he pleaded the Fifth Amendment during his intended testimony. After Steel called out the judge and prosecution in court last week, Judge Glanville ordered him to reveal who told him about the meeting. After Steel refused, he was arrested and sentenced to 20 days in jail throughout 10 weekends. He was ordered to report to the Fulton County jail on Friday evenings at 7:00 p.m. until his release on Sundays at 7:00 p.m. Steel's wife, who's currently representing him, has filed for an appeal of the sentence.
The YSL trial has been going on for 94 days and counting. Judge Glanville is expected to address the motions during court today. Watch the moment Brian Steel serves the motion below.
